Autrefois condamné comme anglicisme (de cartoon), l’expression carton d’allumettes est un canadianisme tout à fait acceptable.

On peut aussi employer pochette d’allumettes.

Un carton d’allumettes est un petit cartonnage replié sur lui-même formant une petite enveloppe pour loger des allumettes. Un carton en français peut désigner un objet ou un emballage en carton. Il peut aussi désigner des boîtes en carton destinées au rangement de vêtements ou de dossiers (carton à chapeaux, par exemple).

Emplois restreints ou fautifs

L’emploi du terme paquet d’allumettes peut porter à confusion, car il est trop générique.

Quant au terme livret d’allumettes, il est déconseillé. Il est calqué sur match book, équivalent anglais de carton d’allumettes. Le carton d’allumettes n’a pas la forme d’un livret, d’un petit livre.
