Valid means “factual,” “relevant,” “appropriate” or “legally binding.”
- Raymond’s suggestions were valid because they were based on sound reasoning.
- The university deemed serious illness a valid reason for not writing a final exam.
- That 1-800 telephone number is not valid outside Canada.
- The car warranty is valid for two years or 100,000 kilometres.
The opposite of valid is invalid (pronounced in-VA-lid).
- Will they accept an invalid (expired) passport as identification?
A person who is chronically weak or sick is an invalid (pronounced IN-vuh-lid).
- The clinic now provides round-the-clock care for invalids.
