Underground Railroad, Underground Railway

The Underground Railroad (sometimes Railway) was not a physical rail line, but a network of people who helped slaves escape from the American South into Canada and the northern states. Always capitalize both words.

  • The Buxton Settlement in Elgin County, Ontario, was one destination of the Underground Railroad.
