practically, theoretically

The adverb practically means “by means of experience or practice”; it means the opposite of theoretically.

  • Kelly gained her knowledge of tide pools practically, not theoretically, while growing up in Back Bay, New Brunswick.

In addition, practically is a synonym for almost.

  • Twan lived near the volcano practically (or almost) his whole life.
