The prefix and combining form para- has several meanings.

Meaning 2: outside of
- Usually, what science cannot explain is considered paranormal.
Meaning 3: involving the use of parachutes
- Paragliding can make you feel like a bird in flight.
Meaning 4: protect
- Sit under a parasol to protect yourself from the sun.
