Macintosh, McIntosh, mackintosh, macintosh

Note the different spellings of “Macintosh” (a computer), “McIntosh” (an apple) and “mackintosh” or “macintosh” (a waterproof coat).

  • Pat took off her mackintosh, turned on her Macintosh and logged in, while chewing thoughtfully on a ripe, red McIntosh.
  • Charles Macintosh invented the rubberized fabric used in the mackintosh (or macintosh) raincoat.

Informally, the computer or the apple may be called a “Mac” and the coat a “mac.”

  • Pat took off her mac and turned on her Mac before taking a bite of a juicy Mac.
