lan-, lani-, lano-

The combining forms lan-, lani- and lano- mean “wool.” These combining forms appear in various scientific terms.

lanate, lanose: woolly, covered with woolly hairs

  • The velvety softness of its lanate leaves makes lamb’s ear a popular garden plant.

laniferous: wool-bearing

  • Wool is collected from laniferous animals such as sheep and alpacas.

lanolin: a greasy substance found naturally on wool

  • Certain breeds of sheep produce large amounts of lanolin, a fatty substance frequently used in cosmetics.

lanolate: to add lanolin to a product

  • A lanolated cream is beneficial for dry skin.
