The combined forms of jewel may have one l (American spelling) or two (British spelling); Canadian writers prefer the double l, but both spellings are accepted. Be consistent within the same text.

  • It was said that India was the jewel in the British Empire’s crown.
  • Sylvia took her broken necklace to the jeweller (or jeweler) for repair.
  • Travellers should leave their valuable jewellery (or jewelry) in a safe place at home.
  • Please don’t wear your jewelled (or jeweled) jacket to the smoky bar.
