begin with

When naming the first element in something, use the preposition with.

  • Hamlet begins with the words “Who’s there?”
  • I hope Céline will begin the show with a romantic song.

The expression to begin with is equivalent to the phrase “in the first place”.

  • To begin with , I want to welcome you all to the Canada Day celebrations.
