L’expression à défaut de signifie « dans le cas d’un manque de », « en l’absence de ». On peut la faire suivre d’un nom de chose, d’un nom de personne ou d’un adverbe, mais non d’un verbe à l’infinitif :
- Les questions peuvent être soumises à un comité de conciliation et, à défaut d’entente, à un conseil d’arbitrage. (et non : à défaut de s’entendre)
- À défaut de madère, on pourra mettre dans la sauce un bon vin blanc. (et non : à défaut de prendre du madère)
- À défaut d’un avocat spécialisé en divorce, on fera appel à un médiateur. (et non : à défaut d’engager un avocat)
