Punjabi, Panjabi
One of the 15 official languages of India, Punjabi or Panjabi is also widely spoken in the Punjab (Panjab) area of Pakistan. It is the language of Sikhs and is written using various alphabets, including its own. Darshan writes poetry in English and Punjabi (or Panjabi). The Punjabi (or Panjabi) alphabet, Gurmukhi, was devised by Guru Angad in the sixteenth century. A native or resident of the Punjab is called a Punjabi. Dari, Farsi, Parsi, Persian
Farsi, also known as Persian, is the modern Iranian language spoken in Iran. The dialect spoken in Afghanistan is called Dari or Dari Persian. These languages are written in the Perso-Arabic alphabet. Achim is fluent in Farsi, and so he will easily find work in Iran or Afghanistan. The official languages of Afghanistan are Pashto and Dari Persian. Parsi is the name of an ancient Persian dialect; the term Parsi (sometimes spelled Parsee) also refers to an Indian Zoroastrian. Laplander, Lapp, Sami
The Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia now prefer to be called Sami rather than Lapps or Laplanders. Sami is both a singular and a plural noun and can be used as an adjective as well. Our guide on the reindeer-sledding trip was a Sami. The Sami live in the area once known as Lapland. Filipino, Pilipino, Tagalog
Filipino (formerly called Pilipino) is the national language—and one of two official languages—of the Philippines; the other official language is English. Modern Filipino has incorporated many English and Spanish words. Note: Filipino is essentially the same language as Tagalog, a major language of the region. A native or inhabitant of the Philippines is known as a Filipino (masculine or inclusive) or a Filipina (feminine). Corazon Aquino was the first Filipina to serve as president of the Philippines. Rose met many other Filipino women when she moved to Vancouver. Croat, Croatian, Serb, Serbian, Serbo-Croatian, Bosnian-Croatian
Both Croat and Croatian refer to the language and people of Croatia; Serbian refers to the language of Serbia, while Serb designates the people. Serbs and Croats understand one another’s speech, but their alphabets are very different. Lejla’s mother is a Serb, and her father is a Croat, but she is a Canadian. In the former Yugoslavia, Croatian and Serbian were considered one language, called Serbo-Croatian or Serbo-Croat. Today, largely because of the connection between language and national identity, there has been an effort to have Serbian and Croatian recognized as separate languages. There certainly is some basis for this position. There are certain differences between the two languages in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Moreover, they have separate writing systems: Serbian uses both the Cyrillic and the Roman alphabets, while Croatian uses the Roman alphabet exclusively. Deliberate changes have increased the differences: for example, there has been an effort in Croatian to replace foreign words with new words based on Croatian roots. However, the two languages remain mutually intelligible, with only minor dialectical variations. Hindi, Hindustani, Urdu
Hindustani is a the name of a group of languages spoken in Pakistan and northern India; its written forms include Hindi and Urdu. One of the 15 official languages of India, Hindi is generally written in the Devanagari (Sanskrit) alphabet. Many people in Mauritius and Fiji speak Hindi. Urdu, the official language of Pakistan, is closely related to Hindi and is written in a form of Arabic script. Dari Persian, Tajik
Tajik (also spelled Tajiki, Tadzhik or Tadjik) is a language belonging to the Farsi or Persian subgroup of the West Iranian language group. Tajik is written in the Cyrillic alphabet and is very similar to Dari or Dari Persian. Ladan quickly learned to speak Tajik: it is very similar to her mother tongue, Farsi. Tamil is a Dravidian language spoken primarily in India and Sri Lanka and by many people in Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, Fiji and Mauritius. A person of this language or ethnic group is called a Tamil. St. John’s, St. John’san, St. John’ser
Saint in St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, is always abbreviated; and the city name ends with an apostrophe s. The oldest commercial street in North America is Water Street in St. John’s, Newfoundland. A native or resident of the city may be called a St. John’ser or a St. John’san. St. John’sers enjoy attending the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival held every summer in Bannerman Park. While the demonyms St. John’ser and St. John’san are found in newspapers and magazines, they are often replaced in more formal writing by native, resident or inhabitant of St. John’s, or some similar phrase. The residents of St. John’s are proud to participate in the Royal St. John’s Regatta, North America’s oldest continuing sporting event. St. John’s is commonly used as a modifier, while St. John’ser is not. lieutenant-governor, Lt.-Gov., His/Her Honour, Honourable
Capitalize lieutenant-governor when it is directly followed by the person’s name; however, this title is not in uppercase when referring to a role rather than a person. Plural: lieutenant-governors. The abbreviation Lt.-Gov., which should not be used in formal documents, is written with periods, capitals and a hyphen. The lieutenant-governor of a province has the title Honourable for life; the courtesy title His/Her Honour is used only while in office. Ontario Lieutenant-Governor Hilary Weston is the second woman to occupy the position. As lieutenant-governor, the Honourable David Lam acted as the representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in British Columbia.
