official, officious

Official actions are taken by those in authority.

  • Regina’s mayor presented the keys to the City to the African delegation and read an official declaration of welcome.

Officious is not a synonym for official. Officious actions are meddlesome or overly fussy.

  • The clerk was very friendly, but more officious than helpful.
