La préposition nonobstant appartient à la langue soutenue, en particulier à la langue juridique.
Elle signifie « malgré », « sans être empêché par quelque chose » :
- Nonobstant les réserves que la présidence pourrait avoir, je suis d’accord pour dire que les motions inscrites au nom du ministre devraient toutes être choisies. (Hansard, Parlement du Canada)
Dans le langage courant, on emploie plutôt malgré.
En tant qu’adverbe, le mot nonobstant est considéré comme vieilli dans le sens de cependant.
