  • The position of Usher of the Black Rod dates back about 500 years in British parliamentary tradition.

The office was called the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod until 1997, when the first woman was appointed to the position.

  • Twelve men in succession held the position of Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in the Senate of Canada before the first woman was appointed.
