The words inequity and iniquity are often confused. Although their spellings are similar, their meanings are different.

Iniquity, spelled with an i means “wickedness” or “sin.” It's often used in religious or biblical contexts.

  • The Bible often uses the words sin and iniquity synonymously.

It can also refer to something that is extremely wrongful or immoral.

  • The play explores the iniquities of colonialism.

Den of iniquity

The expression den of iniquity refers to a place where immoral or illegal activities take place.

  • The nightclub soon became a den of iniquity and was shut down.

It’s often used humorously.

  • My mom calls my residence a "den of iniquity" because it’s known as a party residence.
