- the text itself

- substantive notes
- forewords and prefaces that contain pertinent information
- book reviews and letters to the editor, in the case of newspapers and periodicals
Include references to graphic aids (illustrations, photographs, graphs, tables and figures) only if they give pertinent information not provided in the body of the text.
Do not index the following:
- the title page of a work
- the table of contents
- the dedication
- epigraphs
- abstracts of articles
- synopses at the beginning of chapters
