telephone numbers: area code

At one time, the standard format for telephone numbers in Canada was (613) 555-0000.

However, since the introduction of 10-digit dialing, it is no longer appropriate to use parentheses around the area code. In English and French, the area code should be followed by a hyphen, as follows:

  • Do not hesitate to contact me at 613-555-0000.
