serve, service

With the exception of finance, urban planning and other specialized fields, the verb service means to repair or maintain.

  • We can service your car while you shop.
  • A large proportion of each tax dollar is spent to service the national debt.
  • Once Ontario Hydro has finished its work, the new housing project will be fully serviced.

The more general term is serve, especially in relation to people.

  • This school board serves Metropolitan Toronto.
  • The airline is proud of the way it serves its customers.
