quotation marks: when to avoid

Quotation marks should not enclose the following:

  • titles at the beginning of papers or articles
  • chapter headings
  • epigraphs
  • well-known literary expressions
  • the words yes or no (except in direct speech)
  • proverbs or well-known sayings
  • matter following so-called
  • mathematical or scientific symbols
