numbers: ratios

The usual forms are:

  • 1 to 4 or 1:4
  • 1:3:4 (1 to 3 to 4)
  • 3:19::12:76 (3 is to 19 as 12 is to 76)

Certain types of ratios may be re-expressed as percentages or decimals. For example, “a slope of 1:10” (or “a slope of 1 in 10”) may be written as “a 10% slope.”
