Magdalen Islands, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Madelinot

The islands themselves are known as the Îles de la Madeleine, but the official name of the regional municipality is hyphenated: Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

  • When he moved to the Îles de la Madeleine, Gilles bought a fishing boat.
  • There are seven inhabited islands and eight municipalities within the regional municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

To their English-speaking residents, the islands are traditionally but informally known as the Magdalen Islands or “the Maggies.”

  • The “Maggies,” as they’re known locally, may be reached by air from Montréal.

A person from the islands is known as a Madelinot in English as in French.

  • Many Madelinots enjoy reading their local newspaper, The First Informer.
