Iqaluit, Iqalummiuq, Iqalummiut, Frobisher Bay

Nunavut’s capital city is named Iqaluit, an Inuktitut word meaning “place of many fish.” (Iqaluit was formerly known as Frobisher Bay.)

A native or resident of Iqaluit is called an Iqalummiuq (plural: Iqalummiut). The demonym Iqalummiuq is often replaced by native, resident or inhabitant of Iqaluit, or some similar phrase.

• Alice, a long-time Iqaluit resident (or Iqalummiuq), has recently opened a coffee shop.
• More than two thirds of Iqalummiut (or the residents of Iqaluit) are not Inuit.
