hoi polloi

The expression hoi polloi (Greek “the many”) should always be used to refer to the masses or the ordinary people, and not to the upper classes, the wealthy or the famous. The article the always precedes hoi polloi.

  • Those who visit the midway at fall fairs do not fear being part of the hoi polloi.
  • As the hoi polloi discovered each chic new cafe, the trendsetters moved on.
