A hoard is a stock of something that is believed to be valuable and is put away for future use.

  • A pirate’s hoard of treasure may be hidden on Oak Island, off the Nova Scotia coast.

The verb hoard means to amass money, food or other items.

  • The ten-year-old hoarded her stash of Halloween candy until Easter.

The noun horde refers to a large number of people or animals, often in a negative way.

  • Hordes of tourists invade Niagara Falls each year.
  • As we hiked the Trans Canada Trail, we were set upon by a horde of mosquitoes.
