elegy, eulogy

An elegy is a poem or song which expresses sorrow.

  • Sing me no mournful elegies; bring out the fiddles and let us dance!

A eulogy is a document or speech praising a person, usually someone who has recently died. Thus, a speech at a funeral is a eulogy.

  • Jeanette delivered the eulogy at Ted’s funeral; her tales of happier days made us smile through our tears.
