When to lowercase the names of seasons
Don't capitalize the names of seasons in general:
- Cynthia loves to wear wool sweaters in the winter.
- Are you going away for spring break?
- With summer at an end, the new fall fashions are in the stores.
When to capitalize the names of seasons
Capitalize the names of seasons when they’re part of an official name or a title, or when they’re personified:
- We went cross-country skiing on the Rideau Winter Trail when we visited Ottawa.
- The bright stars Vega, Altair and Deneb form the Summer Triangle.
- The novel Yara’s Spring, by Canadian authors Jamal Saeed and Sharon McKay, is set during the Arab Spring.
- “Comes Autumn with her sun-burnt caravan”
