abeyance, hold in abeyance
To write plainly, use suspend instead of the needlessly legalistic hold in abeyance. Other possibilities include put on hold or set aside.
- Legalistic: The project was held in abeyance until the problems were resolved.
- Plain: The project was suspended until the problems were resolved.
