Winter festival symbols

In December, as the days grow shorter and the nights longer, Canadians take comfort in festivals of light that celebrate cultural traditions and spiritual values. Our quiz presents some of the common symbols associated with three popular winter festivals: Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

This quiz will require a sharp mind! Each question below consists of a series of clues. First, find the term that corresponds to each clue: for example, yearn + bends = pine + bows. Then, string the terms together to get the whole expression:  in this case, pine boughs. But be careful: as with “bows” and “boughs,” you may have to rely on sound—and ignore spelling—to find the answer!

1. prayer book + drag
2. relatives + indefinite article + Egyptian god
3. large conduit + abbreviated name of reluctant prophet
4. transport by truck + meadow
5. low cart + small valley
6. garbage bin + fake shot in hockey + Scottish for “own”
7. reddish-yellow + raised
8. Lucy Montgomery’s middle initial + low coral island + sound a crow makes
