Au plus est l’abréviation de tout au plus. Elle se place avant ou après l’expression à laquelle elle se rapporte :
- La directrice est partie il y a dix minutes au plus.
- Cet article coûte au plus dix dollars.
L’inversion du sujet et du verbe – qui consiste à placer le verbe avant le pronom – est régulière après tout au plus placé en tête de proposition :
- Tout au plus pouvaient-ils espérer un match nul.
- Tout au plus le Canadien pouvait-il espérer un match nul.
