Couramment utilisée au Canada, l’expression parler à travers son chapeau est calquée sur l’anglais to talk through one’s hat.
La locution correcte en français est parler à tort et à travers :
- Pour éviter de parler à tort et à travers, on s’assure auparavant de connaître tous les faits.
L’expression à tort et à travers signifie « sans raison ni justesse, sans discernement ». On peut aussi dire dépenser à tort et à travers.
