On emploie la préposition sur – et non par – pour indiquer en toutes lettres les dimensions d’un volume ou d’une surface :

  • Cette pièce mesure trois mètres sur six. (et non : trois mètres par six)

Lorsque ces dimensions sont exprimées par des chiffres et des symboles, on remplace sur par x :

  • Cette pièce mesure 3 m x 6 m.
