On peut mettre un article devant le nom latin d’une espèce végétale ou animale. Il prend le même genre que celui du nom commun de l’espèce :
- le Syringa persica (pour le lilas)
- le Nipa fructicans (pour le palmier)
- la Mustela nivalis (pour la belette)
Les noms latins s’écrivent en italique. De plus, la forme latine est invariable :
- un/des Sequoia gigantea
- un/des Gorilla beringuei
