L’expression à mi-mât est une traduction littérale de l’anglais half-mast.
On dit qu’un drapeau est en berne, lorsqu’en signe de deuil il est élevé à mi-hauteur du mât (à mi-mât), ou roulé sur lui-même, de telle sorte qu’il ne flotte pas.
- Ils ont mis les drapeaux en berne à l’annonce de son décès.
- Depuis la tragédie, les drapeaux de toute la ville sont en berne.
