Se mériter a un sens passif et s’emploie pour une chose :
- La réussite se mérite par le travail et la persévérance.
Tout autre emploi à la forme pronominale est considéré comme un régionalisme doublé d’un pléonasme : on ne peut mériter quelque chose pour personne d’autre que soi. On emploie plutôt mériter, gagner, remporter :
- Il a mérité un prix. (et non : Il s’est mérité un prix.)
