L’adjectif formel est un anglicisme dans le sens d’« officiel », sens qu’a l’adjectif anglais formal :
- C’est une visite officielle. (et non : C’est une visite formelle.)
- Avez-vous reçu le compte rendu officiel? (et non : le compte rendu formel)
Emploi correct
En français, l’adjectif formel signifie « qui est catégorique et clair » :
- Il a réitéré son engagement formel à l’endroit des organismes communautaires.
- Il a acheté un chien, malgré l’interdiction formelle d’avoir un animal de compagnie.
