Les noms Esquimau et Esquimaude sont jugés péjoratifs et ne sont plus utilisés au Canada. On emploie plutôt les noms Inuit et Inuite. Le nom Inuk est aussi accepté. Sous sa forme anglaise, Eskimo est encore utilisé aux États-Unis et en Europe pour désigner la population inuite vivant en Alaska.
