Le verbe déférer, au sens de « saisir d’une question », appartient en principe à la langue juridique :
- Il a déféré l’affaire pour qu’elle soit tranchée par un tribunal.
Dans la langue administrative, on ne peut pas déférer une question à un supérieur ou à un autre service, mais on peut la soumettre ou la transmettre à qui de droit.
- Camille a soumis une question à son patron sur les congés annuels. (et non : Camille a déféré une question à son patron)
- Elle a transféré la question au Service de traduction. (et non : elle a déféré la question au Service)
