Le terme coton ouaté est un canadianisme. Il désigne un tissu de coton gratté dont une face est molletonnée ou, par extension, un chandail fait avec ce tissu.
Dans la langue soutenue, on peut préférer employer coton molletonné ou molleton :
- Il faut apporter un survêtement en coton ouaté pour la sortie.
- Aurais-tu un coton ouaté à me prêter? (= chandail en coton ouaté)
- J’ai une veste en coton molletonné à te donner.
