Le nom consortium vient du latin consortium, qui signifie « association ». Il désigne un groupement d’entreprises ayant pour but d’entreprendre des opérations communes sur le marché financier. Certains emploient comme synonymes groupement ou pool, considéré comme un anglicisme par certains ouvrages.
Quand le consortium est composé de banques, on peut aussi employer :
- consortium bancaire
- consortium de banques
- pool bancaire
Dans le domaine de l’assurance, on emploie aussi groupement d’assureurs.
Au pluriel, on écrit :
- des consortiums
