Employée de façon transitive ou intransitive, l’expression compter pour veut dire « attribuer telle valeur, telle importance à », « considérer, estimer, prendre, regarder ». Elle permet d’exprimer un jugement subjectif, une appréciation personnelle :
- Il compte cela pour beaucoup.
- Vous pouvez compter Pierre pour trois personnes, il mange comme trois.
- Alors vous comptez pour rien le mal que je me suis donné?
- Cette faute compte pour trois points.
Compter pour/account for
L’expression n’a pas le même sens que la locution anglaise to account for, qu’il convient de rendre, selon le contexte, par :
- entrer pour
- expliquer
- justifier
- rendre compte de
- répondre pour
- représenter
