Certains dictionnaires critiquent le terme best-seller, le considérant comme un emprunt inutile à l’anglais. Toutefois, plusieurs autres l’attestent pour désigner un grand succès de librairie, estimant que cet anglicisme est aujourd’hui d’usage courant.
Si l’on souhaite tout de même l’éviter, on peut le remplacer par une expression comme livre à succès, succès de librairie, ouvrage à succès, livre à gros tirage ou succès de vente.
Au pluriel, on écrit : des best-sellers.
En nouvelle orthographe, le mot s’écrit sans trait d’union : un bestseller, des bestsellers.
