En linguistique, l’aphérèse (nom féminin) désigne le retranchement d’une ou de plusieurs lettres au début d’un mot :
- bus (aphérèse d’autobus)
- car (aphérèse d’autocar)
- copieur (aphérèse de photocopieur; familier)
L’aphérèse s’applique aussi aux noms propres :
- Colas (au lieu de Nicolas)
- Fannie (diminutif de Stéphanie)
L’aphérèse s’oppose à l’apocope. Elle est toutefois moins fréquente.
