Plural of winding-up

What is the plural of winding-up? For example, a corporation may be wound up into its parent corporation. If more than one winding-up takes place, should I refer to them as windings-up or as winding-ups?

Sometimes it's hard to know how to pluralize compound nouns, especially when they are hyphenated. However, there is a general rule to follow for examples like yours. The Canadian Style explains that when a compound is formed by joining a preposition to a noun with a hyphen, the noun takes the plural. For example,

  • fillers-in
  • hangers-on
  • windings-up

So to sum up, the plural of winding-up is windings-up.
