One child, many languages

One-year-old Alice Di Giovanni can ask for a banana in French and say goodbye in Italian. She is one of an increasing number of children growing up in a multilingual family. While Alice's Canadian mother speaks to her in French and her father in Italian, her grandparents converse with her in Polish. Her mother claims this approach—having each family member speak to Alice in his or her mother tongue—is helping her to become multilingual while growing up in an English-speaking environment.
