Glossary of Paralympic Winter Sports

For the first time in its history, Canada will host the Paralympic Winter Games. In anticipation of this major event to be held in Vancouver in March 2010, the Translation Bureau has prepared a bilingual glossary. It contains terminology relating to the five Paralympic Winter Games sports: sledge hockey, wheelchair curling, as well as Paralympic alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and biathlon.

What is zeroing? Do you know how to say sit-ski, stump protector or bi-ski in French? And what is the initiative Own the Podium 2010 called in French? Look these terms up in the Glossary of Paralympic Winter Sports.

You’ll also learn that a sin bin is a penalty box and that calibre is a synonym for gauge. And, you’ll be surprised to discover that blind or visually impaired biathletes shoot with an electronic rifle.
