Two Alberta high school students will attend university in China next year. Communication won’t be a problem—both just spent the last four years learning Mandarin, China’s official language, at school. Students throughout Central Alberta are learning the value of knowing other languages. Many are enrolled in French immersion programs. Others are learning Spanish, German or Japanese. They all consider a second language an asset in our global society. It gives them, among other things, a competitive edge in today’s workplace.
