Poetry and Afghan war

Poetry and Afghan war

Who has not been moved by John McCrae’s poem "In Flanders Fields," in which he describes a Canadian soldier’s feelings about the First World War? Throughout history, poets have succeeded, where others have failed, in conveying how people experience war. The In Arms project aims to collect and publish poetry from the military community involved in or touched by the Afghan conflict. Suzanne Steele, the first poet to be embedded with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, co-founded the project with Alice Major, Edmonton’s former poet laureate.
