Parliament has a poet?

Since April is National Poetry Month across the country, this headline features Canada’s own Parliamentary Poet Laureate. Yes, it’s an official position created by Parliament in 2001 to highlight the role of poetry in our lives. Poet Laureate Pierre DesRuisseaux’s role is to promote literature, culture and language in Canadian society. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, he has many books to his credit. Among them are 14 books of poetry, including one on Aboriginal poetry. In 1989, DesRuisseaux received the Governor General’s Award for one of his works, Monème.
