A whale of a tale

Whales talk to one another—and in dialect, too! That’s just one of the findings of the Dominica Sperm Whale Project, a joint study between Dalhousie University in Halifax and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. According to the study, different whale communities have different calls, so Caribbean and Pacific whales call out in their own regional dialects. To find out how calves progress from babbling to reproducing their family dialect, read Interpreting the language of whales (www).
