What is the correct format for writing telephone numbers in Canada?
If you're just jotting down your aunt's phone number, you're probably not even thinking about whether or not the format you're using is correct. But when it comes time to include a telephone number in an official document, that's an entirely different matter.
The standard format for telephone numbers in Canada was (613) 555-0000. Since the introduction of 10-digit dialing, it is no longer appropriate to use parentheses around the area code. In English and French, the area code should be followed by a hyphen as follows: 613-555-0000.
Not surprisingly, for toll-free and long-distance numbers, we recommend that you use the following format: 1-800-555-0000 and 1-613-555-0000.
